The multi award-winning hair stylist has been on the forefront of hair innovation for over two decades. Working in both London and Sydney Fashion Week, Brad is internationally renowned for his runway and editorial styling. After opening his own salon in 2003 which was prestigiously awarded that same year, Brad headed a large team for many years, only recently scaling back to achieve a better work life balance. With these accolades in such a fast paced industry as fashion and beauty we wanted to sit down and ask Brad, alongside his loving partner and salon co-owner Glenn. What keeps them Grounded?

Where do you call home?

Glenn Chaplin and I live in Kookaburra Cottage, Leura, Blue Mountains, Sydney with our doggies Arlo and Patch.

What does ‘home’ mean to you?

Home to us is like a big warm hug. We love being immersed in nature and enjoy some quiet time in a cosy 100 year old cottage.

What are the elements that help you transform a house to your home?

When we moved in about 8 years ago the previous owner had painted all the rooms in really strong primary colours and had a lifetime of stuff crammed in there. We set about neutralizing the colour scheme with monochromatic accents. We slowly over time decorated each room. A  feature of the lounge room is the Ellie Cashman wallpaper, a large flower detail . Over time we purchased art we loved and made the space easy and comfortable to be in with accents of treasured objects we bought while traveling extensively. The house is always changing its mood and nothing makes me happier to energise the space.

What creative projects find you most excited and energized?

I really enjoy having friends and family visit and love spoiling them with beautiful rooms to sleep in, an active kitchen to cook in and wonderful areas to dance in. There is always dancing. The deck off the sunroom was a neglected area and was what really sold the place to me. We use it all the time, weather permitting, it's like being in a tree house but with a hint of luxury.

Which life and/or work projects are most proud of?

Glenn had a health scare a few years ago, we were living our best life in a Surry Hills penthouse in a warehouse conversion, we knew we wanted a different life although we experienced great success we walked away from that to do something for us. We bought and sold within a week and took a leap of faith and never looked back. The mountains saved us from the pressures of business. We literally now have time to smell the roses...Glenn's! We spent 20 years or so climbing the mountain of success and now we live on top of it. I'm so proud of us for sticking to our guns and following our hearts.

Could you share with us some personal insights into a challenging time in your life?

I have been sober for 25 years, I was bad, about to lose everything including Glenn. Or stop. So I stopped and over time my life went onto bigger things like winning Australian Hairdresser of the Year twice, being truly happy and having a sense of quiet pride in conquering that negativity.

What did you learn about yourself throughout this challenge?

I am truly blessed to be in a loving relationship, tight group of friends who knew the old Brad and never judged although concerned stood by me. A supportive family, the real stuff, the rest of it is noise. I learnt to step into my own power, trust it, present myself humbly and use my talents in an honest, hard working way. Turn it out, feel great about yourself, get help if you need it, we all need it. We went to a life coach for 3 years and dug deep, did the work and made peace with ourselves.

What type of activities or rituals do you instil to help you remain Grounded?

Being Grounded for me is having a beautiful space to relax in. I'm an OCD Virgo and I need a chilled ( spotless) home.

What is the best life advice you have been given?

Fail fast and move on, don't look back, be grateful for every second of your life , we aren't here very long so make it count and don't be an arsehole.

Favourite travel destination for Grounding yourself:

Paris for inspiration. London for fun and Sicily to recover.

One must-do travel tip:

Edit your packing, because there is something special out there that you just must buy. As I have learnt if you don't you become a crazed person who still thinks about the YSL Jimmy boot one didn't buy!
